Psyche and Soma at SoulWorks

Soul-making through the Sesame Approach

Psyche and Soma is a one-year, part-time course for people with an existing license to practice with others, who want to attend to the deeper agenda within them through working through the well-acclaimed Sesame Approach.  The methodology of the course employs stories, sound, movement, the use of touch, spontaneous play as a way of allowing body and imagination to speak for inner core wisdom – what is honoured in this training as the soul. It draws from Jungian thinking of the dreaming, story-making unconscious and from the work of James Hillman which Mary Smail has evolved through the use of embodiment.  It also draws on key components of the Sesame Approach as founded by Marian Billy Lindkvist in 1964.

The course presently runs on online and comprises of one three-day intensive and seven Friday evening supervision sessions, Saturday and Sunday modules over a period of a year. Graduates of the course receive a CPD Diploma and can use the title Sesame Practitioner and the key logo on successful completion.

Course Content:

Modules on the course include: Two Move or Two Chairs?  The Moving Experience. Laban and Soul. Sounding like Myself – Voice and Sound, Soul: Religious or What? Emerging Story and Play, Jung and the Story Chalice, Soul Perspective and Soul Research, The Soul and Death.  There will be a regular opportunity to learn and deliver the Sesame Approach and receive supervision of applying this in your own practice.  Other course tasks include journal keeping, a mid-year project with clients, and a final piece of writing. Participants need to be able to attend interviews and 90 per cent of the course, and also be willing to contribute to an online group.

Course Trainers

The course is founded and led by Mary Smail, a senior Sesame Dramatherapist and Psychotherapist. She was Director of the Sesame Institute until 2015, now working with Re-Vision Counselling and Psychotherapy with a Soulful Perspective. Mary works in private practice working under the name of SoulWorks UK www.marysmailsoulworks.co.uk  and is co-author of Myth and Fairytale in Dramatherapy (2013). She has contributed several chapters on Soul and Sesame/Dramatherapy and her most recent one uses story as a metaphor for exploring death, bereavement and what lies ahead.
